Biography
Like Matt and Angus, I am a sports nut who tried my hand at rugby league, rugby union, cricket and golf growing up. With plenty of time out on the field, led me to plenty of injuries.
A pretty decent rap sheet for me included: A fractured knee growth plate, fractured forearm (x2), ankle sprains, elbow ligament sprain, concussion symptoms, 2x shoulder surgeries for broken collarbones, ACL reconstruction and more recently, multiple dreaded old man injuries – the calf strain.
So as you can see I spent a bit of time in the physiotherapy room. This meant I only really had one career in mind when it came to the year 10 careers expo.
However the one injury I left out that had the most initial impact on my physio dream was multiple low back pain episodes – interestingly they all occurred towards the end of the rugby season from the ages of 13-16.
I had a great experience with the physios I saw, I enjoyed going and it made me want to have the same social career as them working with other sportspeople.
However, looking back on it, like many other scrawny teenage boys, I probably needed a more active rehabilitation which used ideas from the strength and conditioning world.
When it came to rehabilitating my own ACL reconstruction, I tried to look at it as an internship of sorts. I learned not just what a 12 month rehabilitation program looks like but also learned the highs and the lows, what a good day feels like and what a tough day feels like.
This is where I really enjoy being a physiotherapist. Helping those not only become the best versions of themselves but also being there with them during the tough times.
